THE CHERRY WALNUT SIDE TABLE

The Cherry Walnut side table is a furniture piece designed to truly show off the beautiful qualities of cherry and walnut hardwoods through traditional woodworking techniques.

Sketches

These sketches show my original forms and an exploded view to show dimensions and how it would be assembled through joinery. The top has a frame all the way around that is connected through slats glued between the rails. The legs are then connected through joinery at the corners of the legs with an additional join in the middle for a secondary shelf

Process

The table top and shelf designs are made by milling down strips of cherry wood and walnut wood which are then joined through dominoes. The strips are then joined into a flat sheet through glue and are cut on the table saw for perfect squares.

The frames on the bottom of the top surface is made from walnut strips and were joined at the corners with simple box joints. The frames were run along the table saw to create a shallow slit in which a slat is glued. The other half of the slat is glued inside slits that were similarly cut into the bottom of the surface if the table.

The legs are made of cherry wood planks that were glued to increase the thickness to 4 inches. Afterwards the legs were cut on the bandsaw to create an initial taper, and then was smoothed on all sides by the joiner.

All pieces were then assembled, sanded and finished. Scroll down to see the fully finished side table!
